Anime Takes On A Brand New Life With Cosplay
Sunday, September 27th, 2009Over the past two decades Anime has become increasingly popular and along with it anime conventions have begun to draw massive crowds. Born from these huge gatherings of fanatical anime fans was the hobby of creating anime costumes to imitate characters from various anime series. Derived from a combination of the English words ‘costume’ and ‘play’ this beloved hobby is known as ‘cosplay’.
In Japan, cosplay is an extremely popular pastime and can be commonly seen at public events such as video game shows, cosplay parties and nightclubs. In the more recent years since 1998 and beyond a great deal of cosplay cafes have begun to turn up in the Japanese Akihabara district and have grown drastically in popularity.
One of the biggest parts of the Manga cosplay hobby is the creation of the character costume itself. The more intricate and accurate the details of the costume are the better the cosplay is considered. To this end even a person’s hair, skin and physical features may become part of the overall cosplay costume. Many anime events even hold contests where cosplay costumes are judged for accuracy and creativity.
Employing a variety of craft skills and art forms, cosplay costumes are commonly elaborate and may utilize a wide array of materials. Getting precise and accurate textures and materials is highly important to obtaining the most accurate costumes possible. For this reason, metalworking, leatherworking and a variety of trade skills may be required to guarantee the utmost quality of a cosplay costume.
Cosplay trends change on a monthly and yearly basis as pop culture and anime changes. Due to the international success of some major film franchise in the past years some fantasy and sci-fi characters have become very popular cosplay figures. Characters from Star Wars and the Harry Potter series are among some of the most popular non-anime characters to see featured as cosplay.
Evolving from within the hobby of cosplay itself are some subset groups of enthusiasts who have taken cosplay in new directions. Crossplay for example is a type of cosplay where the players themselves dress up as characters of the opposite sex. However since anime tends to feature characters wearing a variety of unique and not necessarily gender-specific clothing, this is not seen as all that odd.
Cosplay has grown so much in popularity that in its modern incarnation, cosplay has magazines and websites devoted to it. These resources feature detailed instructions on costume making and materials as well as images of costumes from past conventions. Conventions routinely allow ‘cameko’ or ‘camera boy’ photographers who dedicate themselves to photographing cosplay events.
As the Anime craze continues to grow and the art form of Manga Okatu spreads internationally, the Cosplay community continues to thrive and does not show any sign of slowing down. Cosplay provides a fun and creative way for anime enthusiasts around the world to express their interests in a productive and skillful way while enjoying anime and manga alike.
